I also loved to play at school recess with my friends. My friends and I went through different "seasons" during the year, and everyone knew which one we were in. The change of seasons happened like this: someone would arrive one day with marbles and then the marbles were the most important thing happening in the playground. Then, everyone followed them. The next day, everyone brought their marbles and suddenly it was marbles season! I needed to bring mine too.
It was exciting to know that a game was waiting for me at recess. I had to sit through classes, but I knew I had exciting plans during the break. Very important plans involving marbles, stickers, or jump ropes. So we were all looking forward to hearing that bell ring, and then we would all rush to the playground. Elementary school was such an era.

Sometime in the year, the sticker season would arrive, and we'd all start comparing collections and trading the duplicates. The marbles hadn't done anything wrong. We just had found something else to be interested in together.
There was a period of the year where everyone brought a ball, followed by periods when jump ropes took over. My friends and I went along with whatever most kids in the playground were playing, and I loved being part of it. The anticipation was almost as fun as the game. Every day was a new adventure. I knew I'd see my friends, find out what they'd brought, and have a little time to play before we had to go back inside.

Did anyone else stick their face over it and just get pummeled with the butterflies for fun or was something wrong with me?

And I was a lucky girl because then I'd get home, and my brother and our toys would also be waiting for me. I love remembering how much of my childhood was spent playing with somebody. I wish all children could play the way I played. Every kid deserves to enjoy playtime.
